Trace was no stranger to Children’s Hospital Colorado after being diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect affecting the development of babies’ spinal cords. Because of this, Trace was slow to learn and to speak, but once he did, he was always talking. He was friendly with everyone and people enjoyed his fun upbeat personality. One day, Trace became ill, but it wasn’t anything unexpected because he had been ill this way many times before. After his condition worsened, he was brought to the Emergency Department. Trace went into septic shock and was intubated. He was taken back for an x-ray, where they discovered a blood flow blockage to his intestines. Doctors performed emergency surgery, but Trace’s organs did not come back into normal function. He passed away in the presence of his loving family and the medical care team that knew him well.
