October Topic: Infant Sleep Safety
While there is still a lot we don’t know about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), we’re learning more all the time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently came out with new recommendations to help reduce infants’ risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation during sleep. You should ALWAYS put a baby to sleep:
• on his/her back
• in his/her own crib or bassinette
• on a firm sleep surface
• with no loose bedding
• in a sleep sack or onesie
• in the room with the caregivers
You should NEVER put a baby to sleep:
• on his/her stomach or side
• with anyone else (even caregivers!)
• in an adult bed
• on a couch
• under a blanket
• on a pillow
• with stuffed animals
• with crib bumper pads
• near tobacco smoke
