LISTEN: Justin Bieber Drops New Single, "Friends"

The track features Bloodpop

August 17, 2017

Justin Bieber wants to be our friend. The pop superstar just released a new single, which is titled "Friends." The track features producer and electropop artist, BloodPop

The lyrics on today's release are highly-relatable for anyone who has ever found themselves navigating the a complicated breakup. The song actually has a happier tone than the lyrics suggests so it's easy to get caught up in its awesome dance-vibe.

Bieber opens with a heartfelt question of saying, "I was wonderin' 'bout your mama." Yeah, Biebs, we've been there after a breakup. Sometimes you wonder about your exes family, right?

If you've ever randomly gotten a call from your ex, you'll relate to this part too when he sings, "Girl, you wonderin' why I've been callin'?/Like I've got ulterior motives."

As the song hits the chorus it's clear that Bieber wants to be your friend: "So I'm wondering, can we still be friends?/Can we still be friends?/Doesn't have to end/And if it ends, can we be friends?"

Stop your conspiracy theories. There's no way that Bieber is still singing about Selena Gomez. No way, right?

"Friends" was co-written by Julia Michaels ("Issues" singer) and Justin Tanter (songwriter known for countless hits). Michaels and Tanter also worked on Bieber's hit 2016 song "Sorry."

"Friends" actually marks Bieber's first single as a lead artist since he released "Company" and "Love Yourself" from his 2015 album, Purpose.

Justin, of course, has already had quite a year. He has appeared as a featured artist on three smash hits. "I'm The One" from DJ Khaled featuring Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil' Wayne reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year. Justin's collaboration with David Guetta, which is titled "2U," became a smash hit earlier this summer. And, of course, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" (featuring the Biebs) has remained at number 1 for most of the summer.
