OPP: Single Mom Needs Help
Today’s OPP involves the current event in Aurora CO…
A single mom has kept her 5 year-old son away from the TV all weekend because of the coverage of the theater shootings. He went to a friend’s house and saw it on the news. When he came home, her son asked her about the event. The mom told him she will discuss it with him today…
"YI! I am writing you on Sunday night. I kept my five year-old son away from the TV all weekend because of the Theater shooting. He went to his friend's yesterday and saw it on the news. When he got home he asked me about it. I told him we would discuss it today. I am a single mom and not sure how to address it."
Slacker and Steve want to reiterate that they are aware of what has transpired. They’ve talked to a ton of people through either facebook, the phones, on and off-air, etc. They are stepping forward and reminding people they are not being insensitive, rude or otherwise. Slacker reminds us all that their job is to be light hearted and entertain people.
Steve hopes to change your mood and wants to be respectful.
A lot of people have questions for Slacker and Steve on how to you bridge the conversation with your children. Having the ‘death’ talk with young children is difficult…Deinfing what 'bad' means is tough as well!
How do you think she should address the issue?
My daughter hasn’t asked about the shootings, but I work in the media and I get my information in a protected environment. I’m not shielding her from the truth, but I’m making sure that she doesn’t get it drilled in her head like the general public has in the past few days and will continue to for the next few weeks. When and if she asks me what happened, I will answer every question she has with honesty. If she wants to process it right then, so be it. Kids have a gift to be able to keep all 5 senses open at all times. That means that at any given moment, they will blurt out the most innocent of questions.
