OPP: Should I Have Stepped Up?

Yi!

We’ve all been in a situation where we wish we could have done or said something different.  Todays’ OPP, Linda, found herself in this particular situation last night:

“Yi! I was at the grocery store late last night and it was freezing out.  As I walked in the store out walked a woman and her toddler and he was wearing nothing but a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers.  He couldn’t have been more than 3!  I wanted to stop and ask her if she didn’t have money for a coat for her child, which would have been ironic considering she was wearing one, but I chickened out.  Should I have said something?

Linda”

Slacker recalls a situation where he was at a bar and the woman standing next to him was drinking, smoking… and pregnant. At one point he was mistakenly handed a drink intended for the pregnant woman and he chose to keep his mouth shut and passed the drink along to the woman; however, he thinks of this moment often and wonders what else he could have or should have done.  Steve, although joking, is giving the woman the benefit of the doubt.

What would you have done?

I think it’s always good to strive to be a caring and compassionate citizen helping others when need be, but I feel that is the appropriateness of a situation that determines whether or not you should offer help or advice.  In this case I personally would have kept my comments to myself because I’m not the one to question the parenting methods, or lack thereof, of someone with a child when I am childless.

Stay classy!
