OPP: Horror Movies

Today’s OPP comes from Lynn. She writes:
Yi! I'm having big issues with my husband. He thinks its OK for our 6 and 8 year-old children to watch Halloween horror movies. The other night, I came home from class and he and the kids were watching 'Saw.' I flipped out and said this is NOT appropriate for them. He thinks its all part of the Halloween fun. Is it acceptable for little children to watch movies like this? I think they shouldn't be watching these type of movies until they're teenagers. Who's side are you on?

Slacker has exposed his son to some movies he probably shouldn't have. He watched the Spiderman movies with him and had to explain that what happens (fights, death) in movies is not real. He had to show him that the people are just pretending and what happens to them in the film isn't what really happens in real life. He thinks that it's important to teach kids the difference between fiction and reality. Steve remembers going to a drive-in movie when he was a kid and can still picture the scene in which he first saw blood. It didn't scar him for life or scare him away from horror movies.
Do you think horror movies are okay for kids this time of year? What if you explain that what they are seeing is not real?
