Bald pill... Can it really work?

The first anti-baldness pill could be available in Britain soon. The drug Propecia, which has been hailed as a 'miracle cure', promises to do for the follicly-challenged what Viagra did for the impotent.

It has been approved for use, however, pills will cost £23 for a month's supply and will not be available on the NHS. The drug stops hair loss in eight out of ten men. Users run a small risk of temporary impotence and lowered sexual drive but the libido returns once the treatment ends.

Propecia has been available in the U.S. since 1998 and is taken by 800,000 men in 38 countries. They take the octagonal pill once a day over a three to six month-period.

In clinical trials, it has been shown to stop hair loss and trigger new hair growth within three months. In a study of nearly 1,900 balding men aged 18 to 41, about 86 pc experienced regrowth on the head.
