In Connecticut, an 8th grade team came in third place in a tournament, so after the kids gathered their trophies, they took the team outside, lit a fire and asked the kids to drop their trophies in the fire. The coaches explained to the kids that if you don’t come in first place then you are a loser and so all the kids agreed, throwing their trophies in. Was it over the line for the coaches to do that or was it motivational? Could you still be considered a winner in second or third place?
As long as the coaches asked the kids to do it and they had the right not to, than I think it’s ok. Eighth grade is a year when you start to get into that competitive nature of sports. IF they think it’s ok to be in third place because they get a trophy, than they’ve got in all wrong. Sorry, they need to know that in the sport you were a loser. Not a loser in life, but just in the sport and there’s work to be done.
